Blue Ridge Ecological
(BRE) is a consulting firm located in western
North Carolina specializing in environmental
monitoring and natural resource management. Our
staff is trained in the biological and physical
sciences and offers considerable project
experience in these areas. We work closely with
our clients to find timely, cost effective
solutions that enhance economic development, meet
regulatory requirements and conserve our natural
resources.
The southern Appalachian
Mountains are experiencing unprecedented growth
and development along with major stresses on our
local environment. In response, independent and
government entities are currently recognizing the
value of sustainable approaches in their
operations. At BRE, we are committed to providing

Salter, M.S. Environmental Scientist |
 |
Ben
is an environmental scientist with approximately
seven years of experience including wetlands
delineation/permitting, fisheries science,
benthic surveys, stream quality and
geomorphology, water quality, GIS, plant
taxonomy, petroleum and hazardous waste
remediation, and NEPA/SEPA document preparation.
He has extensive environmental and permitting
experience in the private sector and has worked
as a consultant on large municipal, State agency,
and US Army Corps of Engineers projects. Ben has
performed services in the coastal plain,
piedmont, and the mountains throughout the
Southeast and brings a thorough knowledge of
natural resource regulation and southeastern
ecology to BRE. |
| Wes Cornelison, M.S. Aquatic
Ecologist |

Wes
has over seven years of experience in
environmental consulting and aquatic ecology. He
spent the last four years managing Western
Carolina Universitys aquatic ecology lab
where he designed and executed multiple
freshwater field investigations. Expertise
includes fish aging using scales, fins and
otoliths, fish diet analysis, brook trout
genetics and mussel taxonomy. Additionally, Wes
spent three years as the lead geneticist for the
North Carolina Wildlife Resources
Commissions population genetics survey for
native speckled trout populations.
Wes has performed environmental and natural
resource services both domestically and abroad
and brings considerable aquatic research
experience to BRE. |
| Mike LaVoie
Fisheries Biologist |
 |
Mikes
project experience includes working for Cornell
University (zooplankton and macro-invertebrate
ecology), the federal government in Alaska
(pacific salmon research), and the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park (brook trout monitoring
and restoration). Most recently, he has
been focusing on larval fish ecology and
taxonomy, as well as watershed management in
western North Carolina. Additional
experience includes publishing in peer reviewed
journals, submitting technical reports to private
and government agencies, as well as utilizing GIS
for data analysis and presentation.
Mikes work with private industry, academia,
and government in a variety of settings brings to
BRE a diverse background in fisheries and aquatic
science. |
